The Opportunity

Mechanical Assurance Lead, Hinkley Point C, Competitive Salary & Benefits

A new opportunity has arisen within EDF Energy for an Mechanical Assurance Lead to join us at Hinkley Point C. Site Operations is a stand-alone Multi-Disciplinary Team [MDT], that brings together Logistical and Business Support functions that due to the scope and complexity of the services it provides must fully integrate with all contractors and all other site based MDT's and all Associated Developments.

The Hinkley point C project is likely to be the largest infrastructure project in Europe for the foreseeable future, and Site operations activities tend to be dynamic and fast paced, with only key deliverables appearing on an integrated work schedule. This is due to the emerging nature of unplanned works that are created within service areas such as; transport, bussing, catering, facilities management and utilities provision - when a breakdown or system failure will often require immediate attention. The ability to re-prioritise and restore service provision is a key deliverable in those circumstances.


This specific role will be responsible for;

  • Assuring the Hinkley Point C site and Associated Developments utilities meet defined technical standards.
  • Acting as an Electrical Discipline Subject Matter Expert.
  • The role holder may be appointed as the 'Mechanical Appointed Person' under the Construction Phase Plan and as such has a specific responsibility to ensure the site mechanical hazard is appropriately managed at all times.
  • The role holder may be appointed as a 'Control Person' under the Safety Rules and as such has a specific responsibility to prevent site activities increasing the Mechanical and water hazards
The Person

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who can demonstrate the ability to liaise with the Designer, Construction Engineering and Site Engineering to develop and agree technical standards for Mechanical and water utilities. Day to day you will be responsible for setting various technical standards for the installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of mechanical and water utilities, monitoring adherence to the defined technical standards and providing compelling advice in appropriate Electrical areas.

Managers and supervisors carry both legal and company responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of their employees, those under their control, and those who might be affected by the work undertaken, i.e. public, visitors and employees of other organisations. This includes briefing individuals working for them and ensuring there is the necessary understanding, competence and application of requirements to work safely and without harming the environment. Employees are responsible for ensuring they fully understand the health and safety risks involved in their work activities and their responsibility to apply the controls needed to manage those risks to acceptable levels. Similarly where work activities can have an adverse impact upon the environment, and particularly where there are legal requirements, employees are responsible for understanding those impacts and the controls they must ensure are applied.

The Mechanical Assurance Lead will;

  • Review technical designs and procedures to ensure the Mechanical utilities will meet the required standards.
  • Monitor adherence to the established standards.
  • Assess suitability of persons submitted by NNB or Contractors for appointment as Persons. Provide technical recommendation on their appointment to the appointing person.
  • Assess Operational Experience Feedback to determine any applicable lessons for Hinkley Point C or the wider Nuclear New Build.
The Skills

* Knowledge & experience of Utilities (primarily water) systems design, installation, testing and maintenance
* Knowledge & experience of Utilities (primarily water) electrical systems switching, isolation and control including Safety Rules
* Knowledge of appropriate Regulations and Codes of Practice
* Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation including HASAWA, CDM
* Engineering HNC or equivalent qualification
* Membership of relevant Professional body preferable
