Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED)

Use your technical, regulatory or enforcement expertise to protect the environment.

The challenge

The Department for Energy, Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) has a vision to deliver security of energy supply, ensure properly functioning energy markets, encourage greater energy efficiency and to seize the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries.

The Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) regulates environmental and decommissioning activity for offshore oil and gas operations, including carbon capture and storage operations, on the UK continental shelf. Our Offshore Environmental Inspectorate (OEI) ensures compliance with the environmental regulatory regime for the UK in relation to active offshore energy projects. Joining this diverse and dynamic team, you will have the opportunity to work across many aspects of environmental legislation and pollution prevention.

About the role

Working closely with another OEI Technical Lead, you will provide strong technical leadership across our full range of regulatory activities. While personally accountable for a number of discrete operational and policy work areas, you will also maintain awareness of other workstreams to ensure resilience within the senior OEI management team. You will also liaise with the Environmental Management Technical Leads and colleagues within OPRED's Decommissioning Team to ensure technical consistency and will be expected to participate in an on-call incident-response rota. There is also the opportunity to represent OPRED on industry workgroups, and to foster connections with other Government departments and non-governmental organisations.

About you

You are likely to have a proven track-record of inspection, regulation or enforcement in oil and gas or a related industry. Ideally this will include significant knowledge of an area such as combustion plant operations, production operations, drilling operations, well engineering or maintenance management. Management or leadership experience would also be a bonus. You're likely to have a higher level education qualification in a science, engineering, environmental or related subject and be ready to pass the UK offshore medical and survival training requirements. You'll be equipped to deliver quality work at pace and will possess excellent communication and decision-making skills.

Benefits

We offer a range of benefits including a generous leave allowance, flexible working options, learning and development tailored to your role, and a Civil Service pension.

Closing date: Apply before 11:55pm on Sunday 25 February 2024.
