Reservoir Engineer Intern (PhD student) - Summer 2024

Location:

Abingdon, United Kingdom

About SLB:

We are a global technology company, driving energy innovation for a balanced planet.

At SLB we create amazing technology that unlocks access to energy for the benefit of all. That is our purpose. As innovators, that's been our mission for 100 years. We are facing the world's greatest balancing act- how to simultaneously reduce emissions and meet the world's growing energy demands. We're working on that answer. Every day, a step closer.

Our collective future depends on decarbonizing the fossil fuel industry, while innovating a new energy landscape. It's what drives us. Ensuring progress for people and the planet, on the journey to net zero and beyond. For a balanced planet.

Description and Scope:

Lithium, a relatively rare element in nature, is widely used in the generation of rechargeable batteries for portable electronic devices, electric cars and renewable energy storage. While the majority of this valuable mineral is currently produced by mining, there are alternative Lithium extraction methods from geothermal brine sources, Saline aquifers and, Oil/gas field formation water.

The purpose of this internship is to investigate how current commercial reservoir simulation tools can be used to simulate the long-term production of Lithium from such resources.

Deliverables

The student should have a good understanding of fluid flow in the porous media and how this is simulated in the commercial reservoir simulators. This study needs extensive literature research initially, to better understand what processes and reactions play a role in the dissolution of Lithium in the water.

A conceptual model has to be created for the proof concept, and finally, a simulation of the real size case is required with uncertainty analysis, to better understand the controlling parameters in Lithium extraction.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • PhD student in Reservoir Engineering, Petroleum Engineering or a related discipline
  • Good understanding of flow in porous media
  • Reservoir Simulation skills
  • Familiarity with Reservoir Geology concepts
  • Knowledge of chemical reactions
